Illustration for Antibiotic Paper

This was a commission to create two graphics, with one illustrating the ways in which antibiotic-resistant bacteria can form, and the other showing how this resistant bacteria can spread globally.

Previous graphics were felt to have confusing organization, and extraneous details. The hope was to create illustrations that were straight forward and could be easily reproduced as part of a campaign advocating for smarter and safer antibiotic use.

To meet these goals, I designed my graphics with a simple language of pictographs alongside minimum text requirements so that the message could be understood by almost anyone. Although they are two separate illustrations, I wanted the pictoral language to match so that the overall iconography is flexible enough to be incorporated into later campaign uses (such as posters or other published papers).

The graphic was published alongside a paper in the Journal of Law, Medicine & Ethics.
Graphic A, showing the numerous sources antibiotic-resistant bacteria can develop from.
Graphic B, showing how antibiotic-resistant bacteria can then spread to a global level.
Initial dialogue with the client helped me gain a better grasp of the intended material, and began the organization of infographic data.
From there I hand-sketched various elements of the project, fleshing out different possible approaches.
These sketches were then scanned and edited in Photoshop, and after many correspondences with the client, the final illustrations emerged.
